WORLD EPOCH CHANGE: THE REVOLUTION AHEAD OF US

Futurist Review on Global Change, April 2022

As part of our new publication series Futurist Review on Global Change, Futures Platform’s lead futurist Dr. Tuomo Kuosa analyses the war in Ukraine in the context of historical cycles of change, and discusses how it may mark the end of the current epoch cycle and cause an avalanche of sudden, major disruption at multiple societal dimensions in Europe – or alternatively trigger chain reactions around the world over a longer time span.

CONTINUOUS CYCLE OF CHANGE

In this discussion paper, futurist Dr. Kuosa frames historical change as cycles of societal epochs, each following a similar pattern with three specific phases – Big Revolution, Reassembling and Pressure.

Following a brief analysis of the past epoch cycles in modern European history, Kuosa examines the current epoch cycle that began with the Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and has lasted until now.

With emerging technologies, the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, value shifts, climate crisis and the advent of new virtual worlds, Kuosa argues that we have been living in the final stage of Pressure for the last decade, and that the war in Ukraine may now ignite a new epoch cycle in Europe.

“When the pressure grows too high, or in other words, the zeitgeist, aka the spirit of the age changes, we can expect some sort of new revolution to come.”
