AI That Writes Itself

Software Can Now Make Software and Film Scripts

FUTURE PROOF – BLOG BY FUTURES PLATFORM

Microsoft and the University of Cambridge have published an Artificial Intelligence software called Deep Coder that writes code by copying existing segments that it can find. Deep Coder is a radical innovation, a software robot that makes software. This fast copy (and paste) cat can replace human coding labour and act as a model for other types of software. Also a film script has been written using AI and neural networks.

Deep Coder is based on deep learning techniques. It learns as it works and writes also into its’ own code. It identifies code that is designed to carry particular tasks. So basically you could say, I need software that keeps an address database and sends e-mail to users.

Deep Coder is a powerful tool for open source software development or alternatively for larger corporations that own large amounts of code. It can not be used to create complex software, rather software snippets with few lines of code at this stage.

Deep Coder could become a software tool that saves coders’s time to make for instance APIs, interfaces between different pieces of software and data sets. When it evolves, Deep Coder can potentially empower non-coders to get their own software.

Jason Tanz writes for Wired: “Soon We Won’t Program Computers. We’ll Train Them Like Dogs”- Beyond the principle of AI writing code, the question is, what can AI create in the future?

Film maker Oscar Sharp wanted to see what AI could do to filmmaking. Sunspring is a Sci-Fi Short Film Starring Thomas Middleditch, where the script was written entirely using AI and neural networks. The end result is quite erratic and funny.
